Hydrobox, a renewable energy developer building and operating small hydropower plants, solar mini-grids and hybrid systems across Kenya, has published its first Public Environmental and Social Report, covering the 2025 financial year. The report gives an open account of how the company manages environmental and social risk across its operations. Including worker health and safety, community engagement, governance and climate impact while also being transparent about the challenges it faced, such as a year-end workforce reorganisation and two worker grievance investigations.
By the end of 2025, Hydrobox’s mini-grids in Mathioya, Kirinyaga and Embu were serving over 1,000 customer connections, delivering approximately 2.1 GWh of renewable electricity to communities and businesses that have historically been underserved by the grid. The report also outlines the company’s priorities for 2026, including strengthened governance, deeper community outreach and continued investment in workforce training.
